Abstract

The NEWS-G collaboration is searching for light dark matter using single-electron-threshold Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs) filled with light gaseous targets (H, He, Ne). NEWS-G has built a new 140cm diameter SPC equipped with a multi-anode ACHINOS sensor. Robust calibrations with a UV laser and an 37Ar source were performed to characterize the detector response to low energy events and achieve statistical background rejection. This work presents preliminary results from physics data taken with methane, leading to world-leading spin-dependent sensitivity under 2GeV/c2 WIMP masses.

Report

In this proceeding author does a review of the status of NEWS-G collaboration searching for Light dark matter using single-electron-threshold Spherical Proportional Counters filled with gas. The manuscript is clearly written and well organised.
I recommend the manuscript for publication with some recommendations:
- Author stating that results are preliminary. I would strongly advise to use different wording. Or at least give an explanation why author is not sure in the outcome.
- Some typos and aligning can be corrected by SciPost production during preparation for publication.

Thank you very much for your report. The two main reasons why these results are preliminary are: - This dataset only uses a small fraction of the total physics data, designated for testing the processing and analysis before applying it on the larger blinded dataset. - The Profile Likelihood Ratio approach requires detailed tests for its effective coverage in the presence of certain backgrounds or in low-statistics scenarios. These are ongoing. These two points are mentioned at the end of section 5 (Results). Given the scope of the original conference talk and length of this proceeding, it did not seem appropriate to expand beyond this point. While we do not expect the final results to change significantly compared to the ones shown, we must still refer to them as preliminary. Please let us know if this is agreeable.
