We theoretically study how the superfluid and condensate deformation of a weakly interacting ultracold Bose gas evolve during the ramp-up of an external weak disorder potential. Both resulting deformations turn out to consist of two distinct contributions, namely a reversible equilibrium one, already predicted by Huang and Meng in 1992, and a nonequilibrium dynamical one, whose magnitude depends on the details of the ramping protocol. For the specific case of the exponential ramp-up protocol, we are able to derive analytical time-dependent expressions for the above quantities. After a sufficiently long time, a steady state emerges that is generically out of equilibrium. We take the first step in investigating its properties by studying its relaxation dynamics. In addition, we analyze the two-time correlation function and elucidate its relation to the equilibrium and the dynamical part of the condensate deformation.

The truncated Wigner approximation is an established approach that describes the dynamics of weakly interacting Bose gases beyond the mean-field level. Although it allows a quantum field to be expressed by a stochastic c-number field, the simulation of the time evolution is still very demanding for most applications. Here, we develop a numerically inexpensive scheme by approximating the c-number field with a variational ansatz. The dynamics of the ansatz function is described by a tractable set of coupled ordinary stochastic differential equations for the respective variational parameters. We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of a three-dimensional Bose gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice with a transverse isotropic harmonic confinement. The accuracy and computational inexpensiveness of our method are demonstrated by comparing its predictions to experimental data.

We consider a time-dependent extension of a perturbative mean-field approach to the homogeneous dirty boson problem by considering how switching on and off a weak disorder potential affects the stationary state of an initially equilibrated Bose-Einstein condensate by the emergence of a disorder-induced condensate deformation. We find that in the switch on scenario the stationary condensate deformation turns out to be a sum of an equilibrium part, that actually corresponds to adiabatic switching on the disorder, and a dynamically-induced part, where the latter depends on the particular driving protocol. If the disorder is switched off afterwards, the resulting condensate deformation acquires an additional dynamically-induced part in the long-time limit, while the equilibrium part vanishes. We also present an appropriate generalization to inhomogeneous trapped condensates. Our results demonstrate that the condensate deformation represents an indicator of the generically non-equilibrium nature of steady states of a Bose gas in a temporally controlled weak disorder.
