• Remembering David J. Rowe

  David Rowe was a highly respected theoretical physicist who made seminal contributions that improved our understanding of the atomic nucleus, in particular of the collective behaviour of its constituent nucleons - results he often obtained with the use of sophisticated group-theoretical methods. He will also be remembered as the (co-)author of monographs on nuclear physics, written with the scientific rigour that was characteristic of his research.

• Chiralspin symmetry and confinement

  Interesting lattice QCD simulations at high temperature in QCD and particular truncated studies have shown the emergence of an unexpected group symmetry, so called \textit{chiralspin}. However this is not a symmetry of the QCD action for free quarks, which makes unclear the transition to deconfinement at high temperature in QCD. Therefore we try to redefine this group so that is a symmetry of free quark action and it is consistent with the presence of deconfinement in QCD.

• The impact of the diffusion parameter on the passage time of the folding process

  Recently, a mathematical method to solve the Fokker Plank equation (FPE) enabled the analysis of the protein folding kinetics, through the construction of the temporal evolution of the probability density. A symmetric tri-stable potential function was used to describe the unfolded and folded states of the protein as well as an intermediate state of the protein. In this paper, the main points of the methodology are reviewed, based on the algebraic Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics (SQM) formalism, and new results on the kinetics of the evolution of the system characterized in terms of the diffusion parameter are presented.

• Intermittency analysis of charged hadrons generated in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV

  Local density fluctuations are expected to scale as a universal power-law when the system approaches critical point. Such power-law fluctuations are studied within the framework of intermittency through the measurement of normalized factorial moments in ($\eta$, $\phi$) phase space. Observations and results from the intermittency analysis performed for charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions using PYTHIA8/Angantyr at 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV are reported. We observe no scaling behaviour in the particle generation for any of the centrality studied in narrow p$_T$ bins. The scaling exponent $\nu$ shows no dependence on the centrality ranges.

• Towards better discrimination and improved modelling of dark-sector showers

  As no evidence for classic WIMP-based signatures of dark matter have been found at the LHC, several phenomenological studies have raised the possibility of accessing a strongly-interacting dark sector through new collider-event topologies. If dark mesons exist, their evolution and hadronization procedure are currently little constrained. They could decay promptly and result in QCD-like jet structures, even though the original decaying particles are dark sector ones; they could behave as semi-visible jets; or they could behave as completely detector-stable hadrons, in which case the final state is just the missing transverse momentum. In this contribution we will introduce a study performed to explore use of jet substructure methods to distinguish dark-sector from QCD jets in the first two scenarios, using observables in a IRC-safe linear basis, and discuss ways forward for this approach to dark-matter at the LHC.

• Photon-photon fusion and tau g-2 measurement in ATLAS

  Relativistic heavy-ion beams at the LHC are accompanied by a large flux of equivalent photons. New measurements of exclusive dilepton production (electron, muon, and tau pairs) performed by the ATLAS experiment are discussed. We present the photon-induced production of tau pairs and constraints on the tau lepton's anomalous magnetic dipole moment. In addition, measurements of photon-induced electron and muon pair production are presented, which provide strong constraints on the nuclear photon flux and its dependence on the impact parameter and photon energy. Forward neutrons are utilised to provide an experimental handle on the impact parameter range sampled in the events.

• Normative approaches to neural coding and behavior

  These are a brief set of lectures notes for lectures given at the Les Houches Summer School in Theoretical Biological Physics in July 2023. In these notes, I provide an introduction to some of the theoretical frameworks that are used to understand how the brain makes sense of incoming signals from the environment to ultimately guide effective behavior. I then discuss how we can apply these frameworks to understand the structure and function of real brains.

• Irreducible representations of $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded supersymmetry algebra and their applications

  We give a brief review on recent developments of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded symmetry in physics in which hidden $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded symmetries and $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded extensions of known systems are discussed. This elucidates physical relevance of the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded algebras. As an example of physically interesting algebra, we take $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded supersymmetry (SUSY) algebras and consider their irreducible representations (irreps). A list of irreps for ${\cal N} = 1, 2$ algebras is presented and as an application of the irreps, $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded SUSY classical actions are constructed.

• Beyond Cooperation: The Role of Origin Countries in Deportation Efforts, Evidence from Mexico (1942 to 1964)

  For deportations to be carried out, host countries must secure inter-state cooperation with origin countries where they seek to deport noncitizens. However, origin countries may decide to cooperate or resist cooperation. This paper pushes the scholarship by exploring why some origin countries not only decide to cooperate but also become proactive actors in deportation efforts by encouraging and promoting the deportation of their citizens despite the economic and political costs. This paper unpacks this puzzle by analyzing why the Mexican government became a proactive actor in facilitating the deportation of its citizens from the 1940s to the 1960s. Drawing on state archival research in the U.S. and Mexico, I argue that the Mexican government became a proactive actor as a strategy to address its domestic challenges and to cultivate its diplomatic relations with the U.S. government and the benefits that came with such relation including the continuation of the Bracero Program, the largest guest worker program. This study makes two contributions. Empirically, this article provides an in-depth analysis on how Mexico, the country with the highest deportation flows in the Western Hemisphere, managed deportations during one of the largest U.S. removal operations. Second, by introducing the concept of proactiveness, it expands the field of migration diplomacy by unpacking the conditions that motivate origin countries to become proactive actors in deportation proceedings.

• Introduction to the usage of open data from the Large Hadron Collider for computer scientists in the context of machine learning

  Deep learning techniques have evolved rapidly in recent years, significantly impacting various scientific fields, including experimental particle physics. To effectively leverage the latest developments in computer science for particle physics, a strengthened collaboration between computer scientists and physicists is essential. As all machine learning techniques depend on the availability and comprehensibility of extensive data, clear data descriptions and commonly used data formats are prerequisites for successful collaboration. In this study, we converted open data from the Large Hadron Collider, recorded in the ROOT data format commonly used in high-energy physics, to pandas DataFrames, a well-known format in computer science. Additionally, we provide a brief introduction to the data's content and interpretation. This paper aims to serve as a starting point for future interdisciplinary collaborations between computer scientists and physicists, fostering closer ties and facilitating efficient knowledge exchange.
